I was born in Owensboro and attended Brescia College, graduating in 1977 with a B.S. in Biology, Magna Cum Laude. I attended the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and received my medical degree in 1982. I completed a three-year residency in Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. I am Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics  as well as a member of the Kentucky Pediatric Society. I have served as Medical Director of Peak Medical Research.

My wife Cate is an elected member of the Owensboro Board of Education. We have two daughters, Grace , who is graduate school at UK and Madeline who is an actor in Chicago . We also enjoy cooking, gardening, music and theater.
